Wicker Woven Stair Step Stairstep Basket

Hand-woven and hand-crafted woven stairstep basket (step basket) made entirely of wicker woven cane in a rich mahogany red-brown with a black iron frame for superior strength and stability.  Completely woven basket bases do not allow small items to fall out.

The beauty of the natural woven basketry materials blends beautifully in contemporary, traditional and country style decors.  Wicker is handwoven fiber formed into a useful object.  Wicker is usually used for baskets or furniture. Traditional wicker is made of natural plant material.

Often a frame is made of stiffer materials, after which more pliant material is used to fill in the frame.  Wicker is light yet sturdy, making it suitable for furniture that will be moved often.  It is often used for porch and patio furniture.  When used in basketry, it forms a strong and stable vessel.

Wicker furniture has been documented as far back as ancient Egypt, and wicker baskets have been found in Pompeii.  It has been proposed that the extensive use of wicker objects in the Iron Age had an influence on the development of the patterns used in Celtic art.  In recent times, its aesthetic was influenced heavily by the Arts and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century.

The oldest and most prominent North American manufacturer was Heywood-Wakefield in Gardner, Massachusetts. Antique wicker products are highly sought after by collectors.

This large handwoven stairstep basket (step basket) measures 16.5" x 8.25 and stands 14" tall to the top of the basket rims, 22" to the top of the basket swing handle - which lays flat on either the front or the back.  This stairstep basket will fit any size step height 6.75" or smaller.  These measurements make this wicker woven stairstep basket nearly oversized for shipping.  Excellent condition and quality natural basketweaving materials.
