Handwoven Willow Wicker and Birch Bark Indian Market Basket
This contemporary sturdy willow wicker and birch bark market basket was purchased near Glen Arbor, (Northwestern) Michigan. (c. 2001) Perfect for that Lodge Look, with a primitive Native American Indian basket appearance and style which is so popular now in home decorating! Handwoven of all natural materials! Un-peeled willow was used as the frame of the basket, which utilizes the spoke design in the base.
The twisted willow handle was formed with sturdy lengths of willow, well soaked in warm water to bend, with thinner willow twisted over the larger diameter willow to form the twisted handle design. Thin diameter willow was used to strengthen the handle attachment.
The three rows of natural birch bark measure 1" wide each and are thicker than normal birch bark baskets. The contrast between the natural un-peeled willow and the creamy white of the birchbark make a striking statement on this basket.
Sturdy enough to use every day as it weighs over 1/2 pound, this market basket measures 33" diameter, 4.25" to top of rims and 14" high to top of stationary handle.
This hand woven market basket has been used as display only, and is in great condition with no damage to the willow or the birch bark. Natural finish on the basket, no shellac or stain. Since this basket was purchased at a home decor gift shop and was unmarked, I can not say with certainty who the basket weaving artist was. May not be Indian-made.
