Vintage Oak Buttocks Egg Basket Oak Handle Ribs Weaving
This is a vintage Appalachian ribbed oak buttocks basket, made entirely of hand-carved and split oak. Oak carved ribs, fine oak basketweaving and a hand-carved oak handle with nailed oak rims and a decorative rib above the basket rims, this vintage oak buttocks egg basket would make an excellent addition to a vintage basketry collection.
This slightly out of round hand-wovenAppalachian oak buttocks basket has 34 hand-carved and tapered oak ribs (not including the rims and the decorative extra oak rib above the basket rims), tight oak split basketweaving, and, over the years, has achieved a golden tan, which will continue to darken over the years. Excellent condition with no broken ribs or weaving. Used for display only. Penciled on the handle is the original price of $3.00 - which should give you a narrow time-frame for the actual age of this vintage buttocks egg basket.
Handwoven ribbed baskets, are also known as the melon basket, buttocks basket, fanny basket, peanut basket, gizzard basket, bow basket, egg basket and many other regional names. This is the basket with the familiar "ojo de Dios" or God's eye wrapped pattern on each end of the basket where the handle meets the rim. Wherever you travel in North America, you'll more than likely see these ribbed buttocks egg baskets.
This vintage Appalachian ribbed buttocks egg basket measures 12.5 x 13", 7.5" high to the basket rims, 11.5" high to the top of the basket handle. From my personal basketry collection.
