Fine hand-crafted woven 8" Nantucket Round Basket with cherry wood lid and base by Kathleen Becker of Simply Baskets. (c. 2000)
This fine hand-woven round Nantucket Basket has a finished cherry wood base, 61 hand-tapered reed staves, fine Nantucket-grade cane weaving and traditional reed rims.
The rims of this Nantucket Basket have been steam formed, scarfed and tapered, then nailed with tiny escutcheon pins. A wide piece of cane was used between the inside and outside basket rims. The entire basket has been traditionally finished by hand with varnish.
The tight-fiting cherry wood lid has decorative incised (carved) bands along the outside edge, together with a carved center cartouche. A very detailed faux ivory sailboat carving has been attached to the center of the lid. The Nantucket basket cherry wood lid has also been hand-finished with a protective coat of varnish.
This fine round Nantucket Basket measures 8.25" in diameter, 6.5" tall to the basketry rims and 7.5" tall to the top of the lid. Both the Nantucket basket and the lid have been woodburned with Kathleen's maker's mark. Will nest perfectly with the lid inside the other round Lidded Nantucket Baskets we have listed.
