Russian Carved Birch Bark Basket Box
From Russia with love! Stunning craftsmanship on this authentic Russian Folk Art Birch Bark Basket Box from Russia! Crafted entirely by hand of birch bark harvested from the forests of Russia, this birch bark basket box features masterfully carved traditional bird of paradise detail on the lid. The lid features a highly stylized peacock surrounded by vines and curlicues. Notice that even the vines have veins cut into them!
The birch bark lid fits very tightly to this box and it is in perfect 3" diameter circumference. The lashing on the lid and base box was done in very thin birch bark strips, with the lacing holes being symmetrically placed holes made by an awl.
The carving was created by using a very sharp razor knife, removing the excess material to expose the darker bark underneath the creamy outside birch bark. The box was pressure stamped on the bottom of the bark with the "Made in Russia" stamp. This birch bark basket box is in MINT condition, with no damage whatsoever. An ever darkening patina is developing, as seen under the lip of the lid.
