Vintage Nantucket Basket 7" Round
Vintage Nantucket basket 7" Round, crafted in 1972, with a pine wood base, thick and sturdy 3/4" rattan reed flat oval reed for staves, and cane weaving.
The double cane lashed rims were formed of thick 3/4" flat round reed with a piece of flat joined round reed used as a filler between the inside and outside rim.
Very well crafted, with symmetrically placed staves and tightly packed cane weaving. I only wish I could attribute this well-made Nantucket basket to a particular basket weaver.
The attached hand-carved oak wood swing handle has carved rounded ends and is attached to the Nantucket basket body with copper washers and a brass handle bold.
This extremely sturdy Nantucket basket was crafted to withstand any abuse. It measures 7" in diameter, stands 5.75" to the rims and 10" high to the top of the basketry handle.
The aging cane and rattan staves are achieving a nice mellow color, which will only deepen and darken over the years with use. A 1972 copper penny is glued to the inside of the base. Due to the mellow colors of the natural materials, I am confident in assuming that 1972 was the year this Nantucket basket was crafted.
