Nantucket Basket 6" Maple

Nantucket Lightship Basket handcrafted with a maple hardwood base, rattan staves, cane weaving and a hand-carved maple swing handle attached with porcelain knobs, and signed on the base by the basketweaving artist.

This authentic Nantucket basket was crafted in 2003 by Nantucket basketweaving artist Jim Ruane, an Indiana artisan.  This 6" diameter round Nantucket basket was crafted over a wooden mold, with a hardwood maple turned base, hand-tapered and beveled rattan reed staves and woven with fine Nantucket-grade cane.  Notice the tight spacing he used to craft this fine Nantucket.

The rattan reed rims were perfectly formed for this particular Nantucket basket, and they have been pre-drilled and nailed with traditional brass escutcheon pins.

The rims were scarfed, then double-lashed with cane, with a wider piece of formed cane used to cover the slim gap between the inside and outside rims.

The hand-carved maple basket handle was attached to the body of this Nantucket basket with white porcelain knobs, a brass handle bolt, and a brass nut.  The basket handle swings freely to both sides.

Notice all the fine details used to craft this basket, from the tightly placed staves, the tight cane weaving to the additional piece of formed cane used under the outside rims to give a very finished appearance.

You can read more about the history and proper construction of Nantucket Baskets here.  This Nantucket basket would be a fine addition to your basketry collection.  The Maple Nantucket basket measures 6" in diameter, 7.5" between the porcelain knobs, 10.75" high at the top of the basket handle, and has been initialed and dated by the basketweaving artist.
