Nantucket Basket Lidded Sewing Basket
Beautiful, unique and elegant describe this handwoven round LIDDED Sewing Nantucket Basket by a new Nantucket basket weaving artist! Perfect for use as an elegant traditional sewing Nantucket basket, but just as beautiful on its own as a Nantucket basket!
The Nantucket basket features a beautifully turned cherry wood base with decorative carved rings in the center. The 47 rattan staves have been hand-tapered and beveled prior to inserting into the grooved base. Woven over a traditional Nantucket basket wood mold, the Nantucket basket and the lid were tightly woven with fine grade cane with natural variations in the cane.
The rattan reed flat-oval rims were symmetrically nailed with thin brass pins, single lashed in cane with a broad piece of formed cane covering the gap between the inside and outside rims. An additional piece of cane was used under the outside rim to give the Nantucket basket a finished appearance.
The Nantucket basket lid features an oak starter piece with a nicely turned knob. The lid has 43 hand-tapered and beveled rattan staves, tightly woven with fine grade cane. The rims are finished in the same manner as the base of this Nantucket basket, together with the additional piece of cane above the outside rim, which gives the overall look of a finished Nantucket basket.
The Nantucket Sewing basket measures 8.5" diameter, 3" high at rims and 6.5" high at top of knob. This Nantucket basket has been given multiple coats of varnish to protect and bring out the beauty of the natural materials. It will develop a rich dark patina over the years with loving use.
The base of the basket has been signed and dated by the weaver, and the basket is in EXCELLENT condition. Crafted by "Ripley", who is a new Nantucket Lightship basket weaving craftsman, trained in the art of Nantucket basketry on Island, I am pleased to offer one of her beautiful Nantucket baskets. This is a fine example of a Nantucket Lightship basket and would make an excellent addition to your Nantucket basket collection or even as a gift for that special someone!
