Nantucket Basket Fruit Bowl with Scrimshaw
Elegant Lightship Nantucket Basket Fruit Bowl Basket with Scrimshaw center disk, personally hand-crafted and handwoven by Kathleen Becker, featuring hardwood ash wood staves and hardwood ash wood rims.
This finely proportioned Nantucket basket bowl features a highly-grained ash hardwood base, which has been chamfered on the bottom and broadly rounded over on the top. A recess was drilled to accept the fine scrimshaw dish which highlights this Nantucket basket.
The 65 ash hardwood staves were hand-tapered, beveled and sanded before inserting into the thin groove in the base. The Nantucket basket was woven over a traditional wood mold with fine cane weaving. The ash wood rims were carved, sanded, scarfed and beveled then steam-bent over a wood form for a perfect fit to this bowl.
The rims were single lashed in cane with a broad piece of cane covering the thin gap between the inside and outside rims. An additional piece of cane was used under the outside rim to give the bowl a refined and finished appearance to this Nantucket basket.
The base, staves and rims of this Nantucket basket were given a light coat of oak stain to mellow the raw wood of the staves. The entire basket was given multiple coats of a gloss varnish, which is used to protect, strengthen and bring out the beauty of the natural materials.
Lastly, the highly detailed 3/4" bone scrimshaw disk, which features a lighthouse and a tallship, initialed "jm" was attached to the recess in the base. The base has been signed and dated by the weaver. The Nantucket basket Fruit Bowl measures 10.5" diameter and 4.5" high at rims and has been signed on the base by the Nantucket basket weaving artist.
