Beefy large hand-woven rounded ribbed buttocks basket, handwoven of all rattan reed - both flat reed and round reed, woven with both natural and dyed light pink and peach colors over flat oval rattan ribs, which have been hand-tapered and inserted firmly behind each God's eye at the twisted reed handle.
Handwoven ribbed baskets, are also known as the melon basket, buttocks basket, fanny basket, peanut basket, gizzard basket, bow basket, egg basket and many other regional names. This is the basket with the familiar "ojo de Dios" or God's eye wrapped pattern on each end of the basket where the handle meets the rim.
There are 34 hand-tapered ribs, not including the one formed on the bottom by the twisted #12 round reed which forms the handle, nor the two which form the basket rim. The basketweaving over the ribs is very tight, and there are no breaks or damage to note. As a storage basket or market basket, this hand-crafted ribbed buttocks basket can't be beat. Lovely soft colors, too! All natural materials, with no stain or finish, this buttocks basket will continue to age to a golden natural-color patina.
This sturdy ribbed buttocks egg basket measures 16.5" long x 14" wide, 7.75" high to the basket rims and 12.5" high to the top of the basket handle. Weighs 1 pound, 9.4 ounces. Signed and dated on the basketweaving of the God's eye.
