Large Oval NANTUCKET BASKET Hand-crafted / Scrimshaw Plaque & Bone Knobs/Washers
Based on a historical antique Nantucket basket crafted in 1883 by Captain Andrew Jackson Sandsbury, while he served aboard the South Shoal Lightship #1, this contemporary large oval Nantucket Basket has the elegant look of cane and cherry wood materials. Just exquisite!
Well-crafted handwoven large oval Nantucket Basket with a large and sturdy cherry wood swing handle, cane staves and tight cane weaving, cherry wood rims, which have been nailed with traditional thin brass pins, beveled cherry wood base with bone plug in the base and bone knobs and washers, together with an oval scrimshaw plaque on the front makes this large Nantucket basket extremely versatile!
The oval scrimshaw plaque depicts a whaling ship with a whale tail. The traditional black scrimshaw plaque measures 3" x 1-3/8" and is attached with two brass pins.
Unlike many Nantucket baskets, this sturdy Nantucket basket has hardwood cherry wood rims, and the basket has an additional piece of cane under the rim lashing for a fully-finished look. This is a detail found only on exceptional Nantucket basketry!
The hand-carved hardwood cherry swing handle is attached the long way. This is a more updated contemporary look. The basket handle is attached to the body of this Nantucket basket with finely carved bone knobs and washers.
The entire basket has been sealed to protect the basket and bring out the beauty of the natural materials. The hardwood basket handle and base have been sanded perfectly smooth.
You can read more about the history of the Nantucket basket here. This fine Nantucket basket measures 13.5" knob to knob, 9.75" front to back, 6.5" high to the top of the basket rims and 14" to the top of the Nantucket basket handle in the upright position.
