Beautiful Nantucket Lightship Basket Purse with color scrimshaw plaque, entirely hand-made of natural rattan reed and cane basketweaving materials with hardwood base, lid, swing handle and basket rims.
This finely hand-crafted Nantucket Basket Purse features 77 hand-tapered and beveled rattan reed staves, each deeply inserted into the oval hardwood ash wooden base. Tightly woven in Nantucket-grade cane, with hardwood basketry rims. The woven top of this Nantucket Basket Purse also features hand-tapered and beveled rattan reed staves and the traditional tight Nantucket-grade cane weaving.
The woven Nantucket basket purse lid features an oval scrimshaw plaque, done by hand and colorized, featuring a Nantucket basket filled with colorful flowers on synthetic bone. The oval scrimshaw plaque was hand-crafted and is signed by the artist.
The hardwood rims have been steam-bent and scarf to a perfect fit, then nailed with thin brass pins and double lashed in cane (contemporary style) , with an additional piece of hand-formed cane used to cover the slim gap between the inside and outside rims.
The closure loop and back hinges are sturdy cane-wrapped leather and have been nailed with thin brass nails.
The hardwood ash Nantucket basket purse swing handle is attached to the hardwood basketry rims with a brass handle pin, and a set of synthetic bone knobs and washers. The synthetic bone closure peg is attached to the rims. A light finish of shellac has been applied to this Nantucket basket purse to seal, protect, strengthen and bring out the beauty of the natural weaving materials.
This lovely traditional Large Nantucket Lightship Basket Purse measures 11.5" (knob to knob), 6.75" front to back, 5.5" tall to the rims, 7.5" tall to the top of the basket purse lid and 12" tall to the top of the basket handle in the upright position.
