Handwoven Sweetgrass Basket Tray Charleston Gullah
Older Charleston Gullah sweet-smelling hand woven Sweet grass Basket Tray from Charleston, South Carolina! (c. 1990's) A fine African tradition basket! Can be used as a bread basket or small serving basket.
Sweetgrass basket making has been a part of the Gullah Mount Pleasant community for more than 300 years. Brought to the area by slaves who came from West Africa, basket making is a traditional art form which has been passed on from generation to generation.
Today, it is one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States. Mount Pleasant, South Carolina enjoys the distinction of being the only place where this is practiced.
This handwoven Charleston Gullah sweetgrass basket tray measures 11.5" from handle to handle, 8.5" x 6" wide and nearly 2" high. This sweetgrass basket would not only look lovely on a shelf, but is perfect for serving biscuts or crescent rolls. Purchased for my personal basketry collection over a decade ago and in very good condition. Few of the raffia wraps have broken over the years, but it is still a very sturdy sweetgrass basket - one that can be used and appreciated for many more years.
