Handwoven Oak Buttocks Basket Medium #2
This medium handwoven Oak Buttocks Egg Basket, well rounded and crafted entirely from thin hand-split white oak by oak buttocks basket master basket weaver Treva Myers, is signed and dated by her.
This is an excellent example of fine Tennessee Oak Buttocks basketry and basketweaving craftsmanship. Treva excels at crafting buttocks egg baskets. This type of basket is also known as an egg basket, a ribbed basket, a melon basket or a gizzard basket.
For the basketry collector or for those collecting oak buttocks egg baskets, this fine hand woven basket features 26 hand-carved oak staves (not including the rim and handle), naturally rough oak splint weaving and a twill-woven base and twill border just below the basket rims.
The handle and rim were carved and formed from a 3/4" wide oak piece of oak. Completely natural with no finish, it will develop a rich and dark golden patina over the years.
The collectible oak buttocks egg basket measures 8.75" diameter, 5" high at the rims and 9.25" high at the handle. The last photo shows two experienced basketmakers - one weaving a Tennessee oak buttocks egg basket, the other making the "splits" from white oak at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, Tennessee.
Handwoven ribbed baskets, are also known as the melon basket, buttocks basket, fanny basket, peanut basket, gizzard basket, bow basket, egg basket and many other regional names. This is the basket with the familiar "ojo de Dios" or God's eye wrapped pattern on each end of the basket where the handle meets the rim. Wherever you travel in North America, you'll more than likely see these ribbed buttocks baskets.
