Handwoven Charleston Gullah Lidded Sweetgrass Basket
Prime Charleston Gullah sweet-smelling hand woven Lidded Sweetgrass Basket Purse from Charleston, South Carolina! (c. 1990's) Fine African basket!
Sweetgrass basket making has been a part of the Gullah Mount Pleasant community for more than 300 years. Brought to the area by slaves who came from West Africa, basket making is a traditional art form which has been passed on from generation to generation.
Today, it is one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States. Mount Pleasant, South Carolina enjoys the distinction of being the only place where this is practiced. This particular lidded sweetgrass basket measures 7" diameter (basket body only), 7" high to the top of the knob and 12.5" high to the top of the handle.
There are two very minor areas of damage on this sweetgrass basket purse: one being on the handle where a few wraps have come undone, and the other is on the rear hinge area (please see photos).
