Carved Deer Antler SPIRIT Quill Basket
Intricately carved deer antler SPIRIT Quill Basket, handwoven with natural flat rattan reed and dyed rattan round reed with a hand-carved deer antler "Spirit" amulet - which is an object worn, especially around the neck, as a charm against evil or injury.
Crafted by husband & wife team Andre & Deb Forton of Traverse City, Michigan, this fabulous basket, woven by Deb and called a quill basket, is ready to add to your fine basketry or Native American Indian basket collection. Purchased in 2000 at Amish Acres in Nappanee, Indiana, this basket has incorporated a hanging loop, allowing this basket to be displayed as a hanging basket, or it could be displayed on a shelf standing upright.
Andre uses only naturally shed deer antlers for his carvings. Deer naturally shed their antlers in early spring, usually during February and March. This deer antler carving, to my eye, represents either the Indian Medicine man, Father Earth or perhaps the Wind Spirit.
This fine handwoven deer antler hanging basket measures 7" high, 3.25" in diameter, 11" in circumference and 9" tall to the top of the basket hanging loop. Although I do not believe that either Andre or Deb are Native American Indians themselves, they do try to incorporate traditional Native American deigns into their handiworks.
