Miniature Oval Buttocks Egg Basket in Oak
Stunning miniature buttocks egg basket, made entirely of white oak, with decorative braided god's eye, 16 hand carved oak ribs, fine oak splint weaving and carved oak basket handle.
Handwoven ribbed baskets, are also known as the melon basket, buttocks basket, fanny basket, peanut basket, gizzard basket, bow basket, egg basket and many other regional names.
Each rib has been hand-carved to shape, sanded and each end has been tapered. The twisted white oak basketry handle was formed by a long length of carved oak in a rounded shape, steamed, then twisted rolled into shape, and left to dry. The basket rims are also fashioned into shape by carving and steaming, then drying to shape.
No nails or glue were used to craft this hand-woven basket. Over the years, this natural white oak basket will develop a rich dark patina prized by basket collectors.
The decorative god's eye has been braided and woven for an extra special detail. This is the basket with the familiar "ojo de Dios" or God's eye wrapped pattern on each end of the basket where the basket handle meets the basket rim.
This miniature buttocks basket measures 6½ "long, 4½" front to back, 3" high to the basket rims and 5½" to the top of the twisted oak handle. Initialed by the basketweaving artist, Kathleen Becker, 2005.
