Handwoven Small Shaker Cat Head Ash Market Basket
Handwoven Cat Head Shaker Ash Market Basket woven entirely of hand-hewn ash splint by Kathleen Becker. This hand woven Ash Cat Head Shaker Basket will make a very nice addition to your Native American basket collection, a Shaker basket or folk art basketry collection. Nice golden patina!
Commonly called a cat head basket due to the feet (points) at each corner on the base. When the basket is turned upside down, the points resemble a cat's head.
Although this Shaker ash basket was woven over a wood Shaker mold, I also incorporated a bit of Native American Indian basket details in the design. The two wider dyed bands of ash split around the center, the wide piece of ash at the beginning of the weaving, and the rim detail.
This small Shaker Market Basket features a checkerboard base of ash, which was pinned to a Shaker wood mold. Fine ash wood splints natural were used to weave the basket, in addition to two wider bands of ash, lightly dyed in a soft peach.
The ash wood basket handle was hand-carved with rim notches and a nicely carved handle grip in the center. The basket rim was crafted of two ash splints, a thicker piece of ash for the inside, and a finer piece of ash for the outside rim, single lashed in fine ash splint.
The hand woven Shaker basket has aged nicely giving the splints a nice light golden patina, which will darken even more over time. This Shaker basket was initialed on the bottom by me and dated. (3-85) One of the base splints has developed a small crack (see photo) but the crack does not detract from the overall look of the basket, nor its ability to sit flat on it's feet.
