Antique Ojibwa Iroquois Native American Indian Basket Lidded Sewing
Antique Ojibwa or Iroquois Native American Indian lidded sewing basket made entirely of ash with decorative ash curls and two basket handles.
This is a very well made antique Native American Indian Basket, with fine tight intricate weaving with ash splints and three dimensional decorative curl loops along the side. Two wrapped ash handles are attached to each side of the Ojibwa or Iroquois basket.
Note the original penciled price on the base of this lidded sewing basket - $1.30! This leads me to believe that this Native American Indian-made basket was crafted near the 1920's. No longer in this day and age can a handmade authentic Indian crafted basket be purchased for THAT price!
One large curl in the back has been broken off entirely over the years, and another one near it has discolored. Very minor splits or chips are noted on only a few of the curls. The basketweaving itself is tight and I find no further damage.
The inside of the basket still retains the now-faded dyed green ash which was originally used to craft this basket. The inside of the lid shows the same faded green color. The outside of the basket has completely faded over time to a golden brown patina.
Fabulous detail on this antique basket. The basket measures approximately 12" in diameter, stands 6.5" high to the top of the lid. An outstanding Native American Indian crafted basket to add to your Indian basketry collection.
