Antique Oak Handwoven Buttocks Egg Basket
This antique oak hand-woven buttocks egg basket has certainly seen ages go by, and has done some work along the way. Hand-crafted entirely by hand of oak ribs, oak split and a hand-carved oak handle. Outstanding age-related patina (color), which can only be achieved over the years with use.
Notice the even darker color within the inside of this buttocks basket. This basket may have been used on a farm as intended as an egg-gathering basket, or perhaps a berry basket. Character abounds on this hand-made ribbed basket, from the use marks inside, to the old paint marks on the outside, to the well used, but loved, hand-carved oak handle.
Excellent condition, with no broken ribs or basket weaving. There are a few old paint stains on the exterior end of the basket (shown in photo). The dark stains within the body of the buttocks egg basket are very old and have seeped into the grain of the oak - they will not wash or clean out. However, this only adds to the character of this antique ribbed buttocks egg basket.
Handwoven ribbed baskets, are also known as the melon basket, buttocks basket, fanny basket, peanut basket, gizzard basket, bow basket, egg basket and many other regional names. This is the basket with the familiar "ojo de Dios" or God's eye wrapped pattern on each end of the basket where the handle meets the rim. Wherever you travel in North America, you'll more than likely see these ribbed buttocks egg baskets.
This antique oak ribbed handwoven buttocks egg basket is from my personal collection. It is in excellent condition, with no broken ribs or basketweaving. Measuring 14" x 13", 7" high to the basket rims, 11.5" high to the top of the basket handle.
